Net acres = gross acres × your fractional interest. Not sure of your net mineral acres?

The total acreage the well is pooled across. 640 (a section) is a common default.

This is set in your lease. Pick the closest rate — the math uses the decimal shown.

Total barrels the well produced in a month. Leave at 0 for a gas-only well.

Thousand cubic feet of gas per month. Leave at 0 for an oil-only well.

How this calculator works

The math is two steps. First it finds your decimal interest — your share of everything the well sells: decimal interest = (net mineral acres ÷ unit acres) × royalty rate. Then it multiplies that decimal by the value of a month of production — oil barrels × oil price + gas Mcf × gas price — to get your gross monthly royalty. Annual is simply that figure times twelve.

It intentionally ignores taxes and post-production deductions, so treat the output as a gross, before-deductions snapshot. Not sure of your acreage? Oil & gas royalty questions

How are oil and gas royalties calculated?

Your royalty check is your decimal interest times the value of everything a well sells in the period. Decimal interest = (your net mineral acres ÷ the spacing/unit acres) × your royalty rate. Multiply that decimal by the month's production value — oil barrels × oil price plus gas Mcf × gas price — and you have the gross royalty before taxes and any deductions. What is a typical oil and gas royalty rate?

Most modern leases fall between one-eighth (12.5%) and one-quarter (25%). One-eighth was the historical standard; three-sixteenths (18.75%) and one-fifth (20%) are common today, and one-quarter shows up in the most competitive, active areas. The rate is set in your lease — check that document rather than guessing.

How much do oil royalties pay per acre?

There is no fixed per-acre number — it depends entirely on how much a well produces, the commodity price, your royalty rate, and how many acres share the unit. A single acre in a strong new horizontal well can pay far more than forty acres over an old, low-volume well. Run your own numbers above: the calculator divides your acres by the unit size, so it shows what your specific slice earns rather than a made-up average.

Do royalty payments change over time?

Yes, and usually downward. Wells decline — a new horizontal well can lose a large share of its first-year rate within a couple of years — so a check based on today's production is a snapshot, not a forecast. Payments also move with oil and gas prices, added or shut-in wells, and lease deductions. Treat any single-month estimate as a starting point, not a guarantee.
