Barrel of Oil Equivalent (BOE)

A unit that converts natural gas and liquids into an oil-equivalent barrel on an energy basis, where roughly 6 Mcf of gas equals 1 BOE.

A barrel of oil equivalent, or BOE, is a way to add up production and reserves that include both oil and gas by converting everything into a single oil-equivalent barrel. Because gas and oil are measured in different units, you cannot simply add a barrel of oil to an Mcf of gas — BOE puts them on common footing.

The standard conversion is about 6 Mcf of natural gas to 1 BOE. That ratio is based on energy content, not market value. In practice oil usually sells for much more per BOE than gas, so a well's revenue can look very different from its BOE count. Treat BOE as a volume yardstick, not a price tag.

You will see BOE in operator press releases, reserve reports, and the EUR estimates that drive what a mineral or royalty position is worth. When you read "X BOE per day," check the oil-to-gas mix before assuming what the checks will look like.
